Delhi ₹2,500 Women Scheme: Government to launch on Raksha Bandhan

The government is set to launch its ₹2500 a month scheme of flagship financial assistance for underprivileged women on August 28, Raksha Bandhan, according to officials.

According to reports, the scheme will provide ₹2,500 per month to eligible beneficiaries, with the amount to be transferred directly into their bank accounts from the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system. The government has picked Raksha Bandhan for the launch, giving the program symbolic significance as a measure focused on women’s welfare and empowerment.

Officials said that while the launch date has been picked, the government is yet to announce the complete guidelines. Detailed guidelines, including eligibility criteria, application process, required documents, and timeline for the first payment, are expected to be released before the scheme’s launch.

As for officials, the government is also likely to rename the scheme title under which Rs 5,100 crore was allocated in the March 2025 budget from Mahila Samridhi Yojana to Delhi Laxmi Yojana.

Officials are also expected to explain who will be eligible for the scheme. The eligibility criteria may include factors such as income limits, age, and Delhi residency, while some categories of women already receiving the same or similar government benefits may be excluded.

The scheme is designed to provide financial support to women in low-income households, helping them to meet their basic needs and improving their financial independence. This scheme will also fulfill a major promise made by the government during the Delhi Assembly election campaign.

CBDC wallet is required for eligible women, either through an RBI-authorised platform or any participating bank. “It is also discussed with banks, but this payment mode has not been finalised; maybe it will be declared with the final part,” officials said.

Applicants can apply through an online portal. By Aadhaar, an Aadhaar-linked bank account, proof of Delhi residency, and self-declaration will be needed.

The official said, “The portal is complete, but before it goes live, we have to upgrade eligibility criteria.”
