Delhi Government Crackdown “Post-Fire Safety” Drive: Central District

The Delhi government is enforcing a post-fire safety drive in Central Delhi along with the revenue department sub-district committee and the Delhi Fire Service. The revenue department sub-district committee released 573 notices citywide, while the DFS released 413.

The drive was launched on 3 June after a fire broke out in South Delhi’s Hauz Rani bed-and-breakfast (B&B): 23 people were killed, including 13 foreigners. The B&B is operating 31 rooms in the building, but the hotel had operated only 6 rooms, and the owner did not provide an emergency exit and proper ventilation. From 4 June to 30 June, the subdistrict committee has issued ninety-nine notices in central Delhi. As per the DFS inspection, fifty-five notices were released. Eighty-one notices were released in the South, setting a record in the tally. 

The second score was sixty-six notices in the west, seventy-two in the east, fifty-nine in the northeast, and fifty-one in the southwest. and forty-four in the southeast. According to the Delhi government, there are 72,000 commercial buildings in the capital.

The South & Southeast subdivision recorded 32 notices, followed by Northwest with around twenty-five, twenty-three in East, eighteen in Southeast, fifteen in North, twelve in Outer North, eight in the Northwest subdivision, seven in New Delhi, four in Central North, and three in the New and Old Delhi subdivisions.

Officials said that, during an inspection, they covered commercial buildings: educational institutions, banquet halls, hotels, and guest houses. Police issued a notice for violating safety norms.
