Delhi Government Announces Free Rooftop Solar for 2.3 Lakh Homes

Free Rooftop Solar

The Delhi government has announced its plan to provide free rooftop solar panels of 3-kilowatt (kW) capacity to about 2.30 lakh homes having monthly consumption up to 400 units till March 2027.

“Our target is not only to reduce people’s electricity bills but also to support the installation cost of the solar panels. The government will provide free rooftop solar panels to all households with monthly electricity consumption of up to 400 units. The facility will benefit people who could not install rooftop solar panels earlier due to high upfront cost,” said Rekha Gupta.

She added that the government has set a target of installing solar panels in 2.30 lakh houses under the Green Delhi project. “The government has set a target to install solar panels in 2.30 lakh households across Delhi by March 2027. This is a big announcement for our government’s ‘Green Delhi’ initiative,” she said.

In accordance with the scheme, the Delhi government will offer a subsidy of Rs 78,000 apart from the Rs 78,000 that the central government is offering as a subsidy. The government will further provide an additional subsidy top-up to meet the gap between the subsidy amount and the tendered cost of the solar power plant.

Eligible consumers with consumption of up to 200 units will continue to receive the existing 100 percent electricity subsidy, according to the statement issued by the Chief Minister’s Office.

They also can benefit by exporting the surplus electricity to the grid. At the same time, they will get an incentive for saving electricity. The energy provided to the grid will be bought at the average rate of purchasing power of the Distribution Company (DISCOM).

Solar energy systems under the scheme will operate and be maintained without charge by vendors for five years. The government has further shortened the net metering period to 25 days from 75 days.

The Indraprastha Power Generation Co. Ltd. (IPGCL) will coordinate installation, vendors, grievance redressal, and consumer assistance under the scheme.
